Books Read in January!

I started off the new year with a bang by reading 7 books! Considering I only read 24 books last year, I think I’m off to a great start!

Darkdawn (Nevernight Chronicle #3) by Jay Kristoff

5 stars!

The final book in the Nevernight Chronicle was absolutely amazing and everything a finale should be. This series has become one of my new favorites and I will make it a point to buy all three books at some point and read them again. These seriously deserve a place on my shelf. If you haven’t yet picked up this series, do yourself a favor and just go read it. I haven’t read anything else by Kristoff but his other books are now on my TBR.

Starsight (Skyward #2) by Brandon Sanderson

5 stars!

This book was absolutely incredible and everything I want in a sequel. So much more of the world was explored to the point where we meet tons of new races, and learn more about the Delvers in addition to Doomslug and M-BOT. The majority of this one was spent with Spensa, Doomslug and M-BOT and it couldn’t have been more perfect. If you read the first one, you won’t be disappointed by this installment, and if you have yet to read Skyward you need to do so immediately. No one can go wrong with Brandon Sanderson.

Scythe and Thunderhead (Arc of Scythe #1 and #2) by Neil Shusterman

4 stars!
5 stars!

A world in which humanity has conquered everything including hunger, disease, war, misery, and even death? A world in which people known has scythes are trained to kill people in order to maintain the population? Hell yes, count me in! Such an amazing series thus far! The world and its politics are just so incredibly entertaining and I can’t wait to see what happens in the final book, which is definitely my first book on my February TBR.

Ten Thousand Doors of January by Alix E. Harrow

4 stars!

Though this one moved a lot more slowly than I am used to reading, I still thoroughly enjoyed this one. I almost cried toward the end of the book which I rarely do! It had a few twists and turns that really kept me engaged in the story and I just loved the main character and following her adventure as she looks for her family and discovers who she really is. It was also a standalone which I don’t get to read very often, as I tend to lean more toward series.

Ninth House by Leigh Bardugo

3 stars

Certain parts of this story really dragged, especially in the beginning and I found myself skipping some of the long drawn out references to various things I could care less about. It didn’t pick up and I didn’t really become hooked until the last half of the book. Things really started getting good then and was surprised to find it unpredictable. I’m honestly not sure if I want to continue with this series or not. I will say that its on the bottom of my pile for now.

Typically every month I will read a middle grade book to my kids. They are currently obsessed with Mr. Penguin so this month we read Mr. Penguin and the Fortress of Secrets which is the second book in the Mr. Penguin series.

Mr. Penguin and the Fortress of Secrets by Alex T. Smith

4 stars!

This is such a cute series about a penguin and his spider sidekick who solve mysteries. This particular one was very entertaining because they had to solve the mystery of the disappearing hamsters! Its cute, funny, and well illustrated, and a must read for young children who    enjoy mysteries. Though I like to vary the books we read together, we are now starting the third and most recently published book in the series because they just can’t get enough of it.

What books did you read in January!? Please share! I’m always looking for something new and one of my goals this year is to read several books outside of the fantasy genre, so if you know any must read books that are not romance please let me know!
